Introduction to Mons, Belgium
The city of Mons is located in the Walonia region of Belgium, around 42 miles southwest of the capital city, Brussels. Travellers can get here by train from Brussels, as well as other Belgian cities. Alternatively, they can fly to South Charleroi Airport, 26 miles east of Mons and served by a number of budget airlines. The city's tourist activity centres on the Grand Place, which is considered to be the most historical part of the city. Visitors can enjoy seeing fantastic architecture such as the City Hall as well as the Church of St Waltrude and its neighbouring belfry. The Baroque-style belfry has even been recognised by UNESCO. Mons hotels tend to get busiest in the week starting with Trinity Sunday, which falls in May or June each year. The highlight of this week-long festival, known as Ducasse, is the Lumecon fight. This fight depicts St George slaying the dragon and is set to traditional music.
