Introduction to Leuven - City Centre
Leuven is a Belgian city 30kms from Brussels that is renowned for its magnificent architecture and vibrant nightlife. The city railway station is on the edge of the city centre and has regular services from Brussels and other destinations in the country. Visitors arriving by train are within walking range of most Leuven City Centre hotels. The Oude Markt is in the middle of the district and is ringed by a plethora of bars and eateries where beers such as Kriek and Gueze as well as wines, gourmet coffees, mussels and steaks can be enjoyed. The nearby Muntstraat offers more formal restaurants while the national staples of friten and waffles are sold at takeaway outlets. The main shopping street here is Diestsestraat. Belgian chocolate, lace, clothing and jewellery can be bought here. The main visitor sights are the Gothic style Stadhuis (Town Hall), the 15th century St Peter's Church and the Totem and Fonske statues. UNESCO has designated the Beguinage quarter, which is just south of the centre, as a heritage site. In summer, Leuven has a busy events calendar with offerings such as the Beleuvenissen cultural extravaganza.
