Introduction to Kortrijk, Belgium
Kortrijk is the capital of the northern Belgian arrondissement of the same name and its largest city, and is located on the River Leie, 42kms to the southwest of Ghent. The city is an interesting blend of modern and traditional, and is one of the wealthiest areas in Flanders. The city centre is a mix of massive shopping malls and pedestrianised shopping streets combined with historic and heritage sites as well as Kortrijk hotels serving the needs of business and leisure travellers. Visitor attractions in the historic city centre include the magnificent medieval City Hall, streets of ancient houses with carved stone lintels, faded red brickwork and glowing red tiles roofs, the UNESCO World Heritage listed Belfry and the famous Leies River Bridge with its twin Broel Towers, one at each end. Other delights include the 13th century Hospital of Our Lady, Saint-Anthony's Church, the 12th century Church of Our Lady with its famous Van Dyke painting and the neo-Classical City Theatre. Kortrijk is truly a treasure house of early northern European architectural styles.
