Antwerp - view the impressive paintings of the Royal Museum for Fine Arts
Probably the most magnificent museum in Belgium the Royal Museum for Fine Arts in Antwerp is in itself a work of art with imposing architecture and magnificent galleries. The collection of paintings in the museum is one of the finest in Europe and there are more Rubens here than anywhere else in the world and includes the “Adoration of the Magi”. Bruges is a beautiful city and one of the great ways to see it is from a tour on the canals. There are a number of locations where you can join the tour which takes about 30 minutes; great if you are short on time. The Grand Place in Brussels is a collection of beautiful guild houses around a central square, many of them gothic in design and dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries. Possibly the most magnificent building around the square is the Maison du Roi or King’s House. The are plenty of places to sample traditional Belgian waffles or excellent chocolates around the square and if visiting in August of an even numbered year look out for the “flower carpet” consisting of a million begonias. For shear elegance and opulence in shopping a stroll along the Galeries Royales St Hubert in Brussels. Conceived and built in the late 18th century this was Europe’s first covered shopping gallery and had the motto “something for everyone”. These days it hosts luxury apparel and produce including Godiva’s luxury chocolates. Although one of Europe's smaller countries, Belgium offers an interesting detour away from the usual tourist trail around Continental Europe.It has an amazing concentration of cities, many of which make excellent city-break destinations.
Considered to be the capital of the EU, Brussels features a beautiful historic centre and a large number of museums and galleries.
However, Bruges is much more tourist-orientated, where family-run guest houses offer an alternative to the more mainstream Belgium hotels.
It is considered to be one of the most scenic medieval cities in Europe and is easy to cover on foot.
Visitors should climb to the top of the Belfry for the best views of the city and make sure that they take home some Bruges' chocolate, which is simply sublime.
Further east, Antwerp is another medieval city, this time with a more contemporary flavour.
It is best-known for its fashion scene and diamond industry.
Most of the aforementioned cities are in the northern region of Flanders, but the French-speaking Wallonia region should not be ignored.
Its biggest city, Liege, hosts some of Belgium's best nightlife and good opportunities for hiking await walkers on the nearby hillsides.
