Introduction to Charleroi - City Centre
Charleroi is the largest city in Wallonia, the French-speaking area of Belgium, and the country's third-largest city. The main attraction here is the Museum of Photography, which lies around a kilometre southwest of the city centre on Avenue Paul Pastur. The city centre is divided into two sections, both of which are situated around plazas. Place Charles ll is the oldest one and is in the Upper Town. There are two museums housed in the Town Hall: the Museum of Fine Arts (Musee des Beaux Arts) and the Jules Destree Museum. Saint-Christopher Basilica church is located next to the plaza and was built in the Baroque style in the late 1600s. The lower part of Charleroi city centre is located around Place Albert 1er. Most of the city's financial and commercial companies are found here. It is also where the annual Mardi Gras festival takes place. The city has a partly-built metro station that offers services around the centre, with two lines connecting the suburbs. There are many Charleroi City Centre hotels found in the lower section of the centre, located just north of the River Sambre.
