Introduction to Aalst, Belgium
Aalst is a mid-sized town in the East Flanders region of Belgium. Located between the larger cities of Ghent and Brussels, the town is home to 77,000 residents. In fact, the town is just 25 minutes from the Belgian capital by train. Aalst hotels tend to be busiest in February each year, when the annual carnival takes place. This carnival lasts for three days before its doll-burning climax on the evening of Shrove Tuesday. The biggest parade takes place on the Sunday, when the 'Prince Carnaval' is elected. However, the rest of the year is much more sedate, meaning that guests can peacefully explore the town's historical attractions. These attractions are led by the famed St Martin's Collegiate Church, which hosts art from the renowned artist Rubens. One of the oldest town halls in Flanders is also well worth a visit due to its splendid belfry.
