Things to do in Belarus
Minsk - come and see Khatyn WWII Memorial in Belarus
Life in Belarus during World War II was unpleasant with 25% of the population dying, many of them as a result of actions by the German Army and the SS. Many villages were burnt to the ground often with their inhabitants still inside their houses. The memorial at Khatyn outside Minsk is a reminder of one village where 149 people including children were killed and its 26 chimneys reminiscent of a burnt village. Its 50 hectares are a reminder of what has happened in the past and has been a popular attraction since its opening in 1969.
Minsk - skate at Minsk Arena Ice Stadium
The ice rink at Minsk Ice Arena is one of the largest in the world at 400m in length and in addition to the area where you can skate there are 2 ice hockey rinks and 2 curling rinks. For safety the arena has installed foam cushions with Kevlar and offers reassurance for those that want to try their hand at speed skating.
Introduction to Belarus
Landlocked Belarus is joining the Eastern European tourism boom with enthusiasm and verve. Belarus hotels located near the famous Mir Castle Complex do a roaring trade with guests coming in from all corners of the world, while other hotels in Belarus that lie closer to the Niasvizh Castle are often booked out due to a run on tour groups to this other World Heritage Site. Other major historical attractions in Belarus include the Struve Geodetic Arc which Belarus shares with nine other nations, and the Belovezhskaya Pushcha which borders Poland. Because Belarus shares so many borders, most staff at Belarus hotels are multilingual. English is also widely spoken and most people should be able to get by with most major European languages. Because tourism is so increasingly prevalent, tour guides and hotel staff will usually speak English and most signage and travel sites will be co-written in English.
