Introduction to Saint James - Paynes Bay
Paynes Bay is one of Barbados's finest seaside resorts and is often referred to as the Platinum Coast. It is a part of Saint James Parish and is situated on the west coast of the island. The resort boasts a lovely sandy beach with a backdrop of shade trees. The turquoise seas are calm and offer the safest swimming on the island. Sun loungers are available for hire and activities that can be enjoyed are diving cruises to off-shore sites, jet-skiing and sailing. Highway 1 runs parallel with the beach and Paynes Bay hotels are located just off this route. There is a great choice of eateries and cafes where cocktails, fresh seafood, pizza, pasta and cuisines such as Creole and Chinese are served. There are several golf courses nearby - the nine-hole course at Sandy Lane is closest - and the Barbados Polo Club is east. Holetown was the original landing point for European settlers 400 years ago. It is north of Sandy Lane and is an interesting excursion with monuments, museums and colonial architecture.
