Introduction to Saint James - Holetown
Historic Holetown is in the parish of Saint James on the west coast of Barbados Island. The town is adjacent to the beach. A number of Holetown hotels are located at the back of the beach and there are several more in the streets leading to the Old Town. The beach's soft sands and its temperate azure seas are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, sunbathing, leisurely walks and other activities. Cruises for diving and sightseeing depart from various points on the town beach. Restaurants in town offer delicacies such as macaroni pie or coucou and fried flying fish as well as Indian and Italian cuisine. Nightlife venues are centred on the precinct around First Street. In 1625, the town was the original landing place for English visitors. A monument in the centre of town commemorates this fact and is the focal point of an annual week-long festival in February. The Chattel Village shopping centre, Sir Frank Hutson Sugar Museum and several golf courses are on the edge of town.
