Compared to many other Islamic countries, Bahrain does function fairly seamlessly during the major holidays, at least in the capital Manama.
January Festivals
New Year’s Day: a day off in Bahrain, the Western New Year is not necessarily marked with the same level of alcohol-related debauchery that you might find in some parts of the West but still you can find a drink to see in the new year.
No Fixed Date
Islamic New Year: more sedate than its Western counterpart, the Islamic New Year is marked with gifts, cards, well-wishing and a hearty meal. It falls at different times of year according to the lunar calendar but is typically in January.
Ramadan: the month of fasting is still serious business in Bahrain even if the locals try not to allow it to negatively affect the economy. Virtuous behaviour on the part of travellers is greatly appreciated at this time.
Eid Al Adha: again changing according to the lunar calendar, the second Eid comes 70 days after the end of Ramadan. A feast marks the day itself.
