Off the coast of both Bahrain and Qatar, Hawar Island is the largest of the island grouping of the same name, which has become renowned for its wildlife and increasingly, tourism. This is a prime spot for divers, with its complex bay and reefs just off the shoreline. In terms of beaches, the west coast is the key destination here, with its continuous ridge of sand that gets boiling hot in the summer and that little bit cooler around December and January, which represent the most pleasant times of the year to visit. Aside from its excellent beaches, Hawar is a prime spot for birdwatchers given the array of species that inhabit this well-protected island. Other activities are mainly found in the resorts, including swimming, tennis and other sports and leisure pursuits.
