The carvings on the rocks around Gobustan are believed to be over 40,000 years old and cover the period from the last Ice Age through to the Middle Ages. They have been extracting oil from the region around Baku since the 8th century and many reminders of this can be seen round the older parts of the town as can the affluence that it brought.
