Things to do in Azerbaijan
Baku - see rock carving at the Gobustan Rock Art
Men have been leaving records of their lives in the form of art for millions of years so that people following could learn about them. The carvings on the rocks around Gobustan are believed to be over 40,000 years old and cover the period from the last Ice Age through to the Middle Ages. With over 6,000 different engravings to see there is plenty to do in the region including exploring the caves where the engravings can be found which were once homes and burial sites.
Baku - explore the winding streets of the Old City of Baku
They have been extracting oil from the region around Baku since the 8th century and many reminders of this can be seen round the older parts of the town as can the affluence that it brought. For much of its history the city was under Persian rule and this is reflected in some of the architecture in the city. Take a tour around the old city using the old underground system but take time to look at all the murals on the station walls.
Introduction to Azerbaijan
Formerly part of the Soviet Union, the nation of Azerbaijan can be found between Iran and Russia.

Although largely ignored by tourists for several decades, tourism in Azerbaijan is starting to become popular with those who are looking for somewhere a little bit different to explore and a number of excellent Azerbaijan hotels can be found all over the country.

Perhaps the largest selection of hotels in Azerbaijan can be found in the capital city of Baku, which is the most cosmopolitan of all Azerbaijan’s cities.

There is also an excellent range of Azerbaijan hotels to be found in cities such as Ganja, Sheki and Lankaran, which is situated close to the Iranian border.

One of the most famous attractions in the whole of Azerbaijan is the large and lovely Maiden Tower, while the Atesgah of Baku dates back to the 16th century and can be found on the outskirts of the city of Baku.
