Salzburg’s Cathedral: (or Salzburger Dom) is the 17th century Baroque cathedral that marks Salzburg’s most significant structure of church architecture. Boasting a beautiful facade and exquisite Baroque dome, the church was destroyed by fire, rebuilt and expanded, and now stands as a testament of the power of Salzburg’s archbishops.
Also Mozart’s place of baptism, the cathedral unveils the stunning courtyard at the Square where an immaculate Column sculptured for Archbishop Sigismund Graf Schratten is located.
Hohensalzburg Fortress: is one of the major landmarks of Salzburg, located on top of a nearby hill, offering stunning views of the city and the majestic Alps. From the fortress, you can see a field below the executioner’s residence, the only one located in the area. Interestingly, no houses were built near this residence because of the belief that living near the executioner would bring a bad omen.
Housing an impressive museum showcasing medieval weapons, torture instruments and stories on life on the fortress, the Hohensalzburg Fortress is also known as the largest fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. Today, the fortress is open to public throughout the year and welcomes artists from all over the world for courses at the International Summer Academy.
The Residenz can be easily accessed from the entrance at Residenz Square through majestic marble portal. The largest square in Salzburg, the Residenz Sqaure reveals its lovely Baroque fountain and a huge Chess Set, perfect for picture moments.
Mozart's Birthplace: is the house on the Getreidegasse 9 where the Leopold Mozart family lived from 1747 – 1773. Mozart’s birthplace is now a museum set up by the International Mozart Foundation housing many interesting memorabilia in the historical rooms such as manuscripts, documents, souvenirs as well as the original portraits of the family members.
Make sure you stand where your tour guide is or you can get wet when the water shoots up from the ground. A favourite place among children and families, Hellbrunne is also perfect for picnics, relaxing strolls and social events.
Schloss Mirabell: is right next to the Salzach river and the Mozarteum University of Music and Arts. Usually crowded during the summer, Schloss Mirabell has an exquisite castle with many lovely gardens built by an archbishop for his courtesans. The palace was refurbished for the filming of a scene in the Sound of Music when Maria and the children sang Do-Re-Mi.
