Activities in Salzburg
Shopping: at Getreidegasse is highly touted. It is known as the most beautiful shopping centre in Austria surrounded by charming arcaded courtyards. Displaying an array of expensive brand name boutiques, the Getreidegasse is usually crowded with thousands of tourists so don’t be surprised to find more than a hundred kinds of the Sound of Music and tacky Mozart souvenirs.
The Sound of Music tour: is not to be missed if you are a true fan of this famous musical. A bus tour will take you to all locations used in the film while you can join in fun quizzes and sing along to melodies from the film. The highlights include Mirabell Garden, Leopoldskron Castle, Hellbrunn Castle, Nonnberg Abbey and Wedding Church Mondsee.
For cycling enthusiasts, biking along the countryside in Salzburg province along its two main rivers, the Salzach and the Saalach, is recommended.
Watersports: can be enjoyed around the lakes in the alpine foreland. Another popular destination for watersports lovers is the Salzkammergut, offering all kinds of sports such as water-skiing, sailing, canoeing and white water rafting.
Chocolate shopping: has become a popular routine for tourists. Salzburg chocolatier Paul Furst was first to invent the Mozartkugel (Mozard balls) in 1890 and named it after the famous composer.
Now a must-buy souvenir, the chocolate boasts pistachio, marzipan and scrumptious nougat core coated in milk chocolate. You can also find these chocolate balls handmade in the Konditorei Furst at Alter Markt square.
Concert and theatre: can be widely enjoyed everywhere in Salzburg. You can choose from the pricy performances in the Salzburg Festival to small, house productions at the Music University of Mozarteum where you can find cheap tickets for many plays. For those who want to experience concerts in the scenic atmosphere, head to the fortress or the Mirabell castle.
Salt mines: are very close to Salzburg and have always been favourite destinations for the family. Salt is what gave the name to this city, so why not explore the oldest salt mine in the world and learn more about the history of the mines. A small train will take you inside cave-like salt mines for some exploration. To top it off, jump down a huge long slide that will take you back to the main ground.
