Austria Travel Guide - Introduction

Vienna is Austria’s biggest attraction; the Imperial seat of the Habsburgs and home to more elaborate and massive structures than one could imagine. St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Hofburg Palace (Winter Palace) are here, as well as the Schloss Schonbrunn (Summer Palace) and the world famous Vienna Boys Choir.
There are also numerous world class museums and the theatre and opera is represented on a grandiose scale; you simply couldn’t cram any more into a city. Other notable cities include Salzburg, Linz, Innsbruck, and Graz.
The Austrians’ lust for enjoyment and adventure is only matched by their love of the arts and music. The legacy of the great composers and orchestras lives on, especially in Vienna where some of the finest concert halls and theatres in the world offer outstanding performances. Follow this up with a visit to a traditional coffee shop, heurigen (wine tavern), or gourmet restaurant to experience the life of the Viennese.
The main entry point into Austria is Vienna’s international airport and there are also international airports in Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Graz. Getting here by train is also straightforward and Austrian cities are well connected with many major European capitals. Buses also come from all over Europe and Austria’s excellent road network and many border crossings with neighbouring countries makes driving here a breeze.
