Golden Roof: is the main highlight in the lovely Old Town area which shows a perfect combination of Gothic and Baroque architectures. A characteristic landmark, the Golden Roof is a three-story balcony on the central plaza located at the heart of Old Town. The building was constructed for Emperor Maximilian I as a royal box where he could sit and enjoy the tournaments in the square.
Ambras Castle: is one of the city’s most notable attractions. Built by Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria, the castle enjoys its scenic location in acres of gardens and lovely woodland. Home to interesting collections of armaments, the castle is divided into a lower castle displaying an array of old fascinating weapons and armours, and an upper castle housing inspiring collections of noble portraits.
Cathedral St. Jacob: is a remarkable Baroque architectural masterpiece built on the site of an earlier Gothic church. With the beautiful green domes and lavish baroque interior, the church is also known for its wonderful collections of treasured paintings such as a painting of Madonna and Child located at the main altar. Visitors can find the monument dedicated to Archduke Maximilian III in the north aisle. Don’t forget to go up to the towers for breathtaking views of the Alpine mountains and the city.
Basilika Wilten: the interior of the church is a kaleidoscope of soft colours mixed with the grandeur of gold and outstanding rococo plasterwork. Another highlight of the church is its elaborate ceiling murals depicting the life of the Virgin Mary. The church is known as one of the most elegant churches in Tyrol state of Austria.
The Alpine Club Museum: is a unique museum showcasing exquisite collections of Alpine art covering two centuries including friezes, fascinating examples of Alpine cartography, historic mountaineering equipment and also mountain hut models.
Grassmayr Bell Museum: is a bell foundry and museum exhibiting the work of the Grassmayr family who has been in the bell industry business for more than 400 years. Here, you will see a bell being cast and be amazed at how unique and harmonised tones the bells give out. Don’t forget to stop by souvenir shops for small bell keepsakes.
