Christmas is a very special time for all Austrians and is celebrated with lavish balls, along with New Year’s Eve. Austria’s main events include;
January Festivals
Berg Isel Ski Jumping Competition: which is held in Innsbruck every year to kick off the year of events with a daredevil ski-jump competition using a decades-old platform that was built for the 1964 Olympics.
March Festivals
Vienna Spring Festival: features changing themes from year to year and includes quality music by some of the most famous composers of history; including Mozart, Strauss, and Brahms.
May Festivals
International Music Festival: is one of Vienna’s favourite traditional events and one of the largest of its kind in the world, with world renowned orchestras playing out some of the greatest classics through famous conductors.
July Festivals
Salzburg Festival: is one of the biggest events on the Austrian festival and events calendar and one of Europe’s most outstanding cultural events. The Salzburg Festival has in fact been running since the 1920s and offers up a heady menu of delights, including opera, concerts, chamber music, plays, and artists.
August Festivals
Bregenz Summer Festival: is another summer cultural highlight in the northwest of Austria near the German and Swiss borders, which includes appearances by renowned Austrian orchestras; sometimes the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
November Festivals
Vienna Schubert Festivale: complements the Viennese music scene nicely and is a fairly recent addition to Austria’s festivals calendar; only beginning in 1982. The event features everything Schubert and is much loved.
December/January Festivals
New Year's Eve/New Year's Day: is Vienna's, and Austria’s, biggest night and kicks off with the concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Street parties are vibrant and the night is long continuing well into New Year’s Day.
