Introduction to Villach, Austria
Many major motorways collide with at least three, distinct cultures in Villach, the second-biggest city in the southern Austrian region of Carinthia. Many visitors pass through this bustling railway hub only briefly on their way elsewhere. But, regardless of length of stay, guests at Villach hotels will find much to do within walking distance of their rooms. Remains from the 676m high Landskron Castle managed to survive both the WWII bombings which destroyed much of the city and an earlier 19th century fire. Visitors can enjoy the birds which soar in the castle falconry and the view of the Slovenian Alps, the Drau River and its surrounding lakes or a medieval meal served by staff in period costumes each Tuesday evening at the castle. Another lovely view awaits visitors who climb the 239 steps towards the summit of the 94m bell tower of the parish church, St Jakob. This bell tower, Carinthia's tallest, dates back to 1847. Some of the Museum of Doll Art's exhibits were made in its own studio, while others were created by renowned doll artists. The Slovenian and Italian borders are both less than 15kms away.
