Vienna was originally a Celtic settlement known as Vindobona and was always a frontier post where wars were part and parcel of its strategic location. The Romans eventually took hold of the region in the 1st century BC and later fortified their position under Emperor Augustus to help shore up defenses against the burgeoning Germanic tribes north of the Danube.
