Introduction to Vienna - Margareten
Although Margareten has a rich and interesting history, there is little in the way of actual sights in this part of Vienna. The district, situated close to the centre of Vienna, is now a working class residential neighbourhood. The area established itself in the 1920s when the Austrian socialists were in power; many social housing complexes, hospitals and educational centres aimed at improving the lives of the 1920s Viennese poor reflect the area’s heritage, with many of these institutions still serve the same purposes today. There is a pleasant Baroque church which once held the body of composer Schubert before he was transferred to the Zentralfriedhof. A museum has been set up in Margareten to document the history of the area and its socialist tradition. There is also a small enclave in the district that is filled with alternative bars and restaurants, popular with the young crowd.
