Introduction to Vienna - Leopoldstadt
The district of Leopoldstadt is practically an island, squeezed between the Danube and the Donaukanal rivers in Austria’s Vienna. Although very close to the city centre, it is not as remarkable and lacks is architectural attractions as many of the old buildings in this part of the city were destroyed in WWII. There are a few places worth noting, such as the Augarten, a fine Baroque park which played an important role in WWII. There is also a pretty Baroque church, known as the Carmelite Church in English, with a market attached to it. Vienna’s Leopoldstadt was once heavily populated by Jews and there is a memorial in the market to their loss under the Nazi regime. The Prater part of the district is dedicated to recreation, with a carnival, a golf course, two horse racing tracks and many football pitches on hand. There are many Leopoldstadt hotels, especially around Prater.Visit our Vienna Travel Guide
