Introduction to Vienna - Donaustadt
Although Donaustadt comprises at least a quarter of the land area of Vienna and is the largest district in the city, there is a distinct lack of places of interest for visitors here. It is largely residential and cut off from the city centre by the River Danube, which dissects the city. Although there are no major tourist attractions, there is a scenic lake called the Alte Donau, which is popular with residents. Although quite shallow, the lake can be toured by boat, available for hire by the shore. The district borders Donauauen National Park, which is covered by forests. Activities such as cycling, horseback riding and hiking are very popular here. The architecture in Donaustadt is far removed from the impressive Habsburg buildings across the Danube. This is epitomized by UNO Park, an unsightly complex consisting of UN offices. Donaustadt hotels are reasonably priced but visitors will find more appealing options in the city proper.
