Introduction to Vienna - City Centre
Having retained many of its heritage buildings, Vienna city centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. The most impressive buildings were constructed at the height of the Habsburg Empire, and through the years they have remained largely in the same impeccable state of repair. One of the most renowned pieces of Viennese architecture is the Hofburg Imperial Palace, the former residence of Habsburg emperors. Nowadays visitors are able to enter certain sections of the building. The Imperial Krypt is another impressive construction that pays homage to former Habsburg emperors. The most renowned cathedral in the city centre is St Stephen's Cathedral. It can look menacing from the outside but once inside, visitors are usually overcome by its splendour. The Spanish Riding School puts on shows for tourists to demonstrate the art of horsemanship, which originated here in the Renaissance era. It is also worth booking tickets for the Vienna State Opera, held at one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Vienna city centre hotels span mid to high-end options.Visit our Vienna Travel Guide
