Introduction to Vienna - Alsergrund
Just to the north of the Austrian capital's centre lies Vienna Alsergrund. It is an area filled with students thanks to the university in the district. Here, there are many bars and restaurants catering to the young crowd, with many visitors also enjoying a night out in this district. There are also many sights for visitors to enjoy. The Votivkirche church and the Palais Lichtenstein, both are fine examples of Gothic architecture, are the most popular tourist spots. The church is particularly interesting since it is the location where an assassination attempt took place on Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1853. Visitors to Votivkirche can learn more about the importance of this event. The Sigmund Freud Museum, dedicated to the founder of psychoanalysis, is also in this area of Vienna, as is the Josephinum, a museum dedicated to the origins of modern day medicine. The birthplace of composer Schubert is close by and has been turned into an interesting museum about the great composer's life. Alsergrund hotels tend to be reasonably priced and are becoming increasingly popular.Visit our Vienna Travel Guide
