St Stefan im Gailtal is a small town in the far south of Austria, near the Italian and Slovenian borders. It is part of the picturesque Gailtal Valley, where Alpine sports such as Nordic walking, cross-country skiing and tobogganing are among the most popular activities. In fact, there are at least 30 miles of cross-country trails close to St Stefan im Gailtal. Visitors looking for more conventional downhill-skiing can take the town's free shuttle bus to Tropolach, which offers easy access to the Nassfeld-Hermagor skiing area. The town is just as busy in summer, when cyclists and hikers descend on the town intent on exploring the Carinthian Mountains. In the town itself, guests can visit the ostrich farm, opposite the main church. Visitors can arrange a guided tour or just visit to purchase ostrich meat or eggs.
