Introduction to Semmering, Austria
Semmering is a small Alpine town on the border of Upper Austria and Lower Austria. It has a population of just 600 people, but this number swells each winter when large numbers of visiting skiers arrive. The town's popularity is not what it once was, but Semmering manages to attract a significant number of visitors each year. The town lies halfway between Vienna and Graz, meaning that visitors can get here by flying to airports in either city. From these two cities, it's well worth taking the train, which uses the UNESCO-recognised Semmering Pass, a tourist attraction in its own right. This pass hosts a series of 16 viaducts and 14 tunnels. Coming from Vienna, the best views are from the left-hand side of the train, while coming from Graz, passengers should sit on the right. In summer, the town's attractive scenery means that Semmering hotels are popular with employers who are arranging seasonal conferences and retreats. There is also a popular golf course just a few minutes outside the town.
