Introduction to Salzburg - Outskirts
Salzburg is Austria's fourth-largest city and offers visitors numerous attractions and places of interest. However, the city's surrounding countryside is also an excellent area for tourists to visit. Untersberg Mountain is less than 16kms north of the city and straddles the Austrian-German border. On a clear day, it provides a wonderful panoramic view of Salzburg and the Alps from its summit. Just four kilometres west of the city is Schloss Klessheim, a Baroque palace which Adolf Hitler used to stay in and which has now been turned into a casino. The Salzkammergut, an area of lakes, begins on the eastern outskirts of the city and stretch as far as the provinces of Styria and Upper Austria. Only a few kilometres to the north of the city is Basilica Maria Plain, which is looked upon as Salzburg's traditional church of pilgrimage. Its architecture is fascinating and the church offers breathtaking views over the city and the surrounding valley.
