Introduction to Salzburg - Old Town
Salzburg, one of Austria's finest cities, is located near the country's northern border with Germany. The Old Town quarter of Salzburg is packed with historic sites and museums which have made it a firm favourite with tourists. The district is situated on the River Salzach's left bank and dominated by Hohensalzburg Castle. The massive castle sits on a hill above the district and dates from the 11th century. Salzburg Old Town hotels are dotted around the area, with many located close to the Old Market. The square here has a great choice of shops where typical Austrian souvenirs can be purchased. Pubs and cafés serve nectar-like beers and desserts such as nockerl (soufflé). Among other ample visitor draws here are Salzburg Cathedral, the Residenz Palace and Mozart's Birthplace (Geburtshaus). The cathedral is a magnificent 17th century Baroque edifice while the Residenz is the former abode of the city's archbishops. The art gallery in the latter houses a collection of historic paintings.
