Introduction to Salzburg - Nonntal
Nonntal is a quiet residential district situated within a few hundred metres of premium attractions in the north Austrian city of Salzburg. The district is located on the left bank of the Salzach River, the main waterway. The magnificent Hohensalzburg Fortress dominates the skyline of Nonntal and the Altstadt. The historic Nonnberg Nunnery sits in the protective shadow of the fort. The nunnery was the setting for part of the Sound of Music. Cloisters, chapels and the 15th century Gothic Maria Himmelfahrt Church are contained within the nunnery complex. The nearby Erhard Church is a splendid Baroque edifice with a dome that features ornate stucco artwork. Nonntaler Hauptstrasse is the central thoroughfare through the district. Many Nonntal hotels are either on or just off this street. There is also a choice of eateries and retail outlets on the street.
