Elisabeth-Vorstadt is an area of central Salzburg that is sandwiched between the River Salzach and the city's central Hauptbahnhof railway station. The Hauptbahnhof sees train arrivals from cities all over mainland Europe. The district faces across the river to Salzburg's old city quarter, where the majestic city cathedral and the hilltop medieval Hohensalzburg Castle stand above the skyline. The Salzburg Congress, a contemporary exhibition and convention centre, lies just a short walk from the station. Elisabeth-Vorstadt hotels are an easy option for arriving travellers. There are abundant attractions as well as bars and restaurants in the district. The Mirabell Palace and its fabulously landscaped gardens are less than a 200m walk away. The palace is a Baroque masterpiece with great statues, but its gardens are the real draw and feature a maze, a Papagena fountain and the Orangerie greenhouse.
