Introduction to Saint Wolfgang - Beach
Few places in Austria welcome as many tourists as Saint Wolfgang, whose full German name is Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut. Upper Austria's Salzkammergut region is located in the nation's geographic centre, and Saint Wolfgang Beach hotels are situated along the north shore of a lake known as the Wolfgangsee. Skiing down the nearby Schafberg Mountain is the most popular winter attraction here, but ice skating on the frozen Wolfgangsee is also quite fun. Summer, however, remains the the area's most popular season. The lake is among the warmest and cleanest in Austria, and its deepest point is 114m. A plain from the Zinkenbach River divides the lake in two, and locals often refer to the lake's northern part as Lake Abersee. The Alps northern border can easily be seen from the 11kms-long resort. Long before this town became a popular destination spa, it was a significant religious pilgrimage site, mainly because of its 12th century church.
