The most famous landmark in Mondsee, Austria, may be the church used in the wedding scene of the Sound of Music film. However, this town's main attraction for the many tourists who come here year after year is the stunning scenery and the lake, also named Mondsee, the third biggest in Austria's popular Salzkammergut resort area. This lake has been known as 'moon lake' since Roman times because it is said to resemble the moon, and it is ranked among the Salzkammergut's warmest lakes. Motorists can easily see the Schafberg and Drachenwand mountain ranges as they drive along the main autobahn between Salzburg and Vienna, which runs along the lake's southern shore. Most Mondsee City Centre hotels are situated in the town's northwest corner but others can be found dotted throughout the area. The Heimatmuseum und Pfahlbaumuseum, dedicated to prehistoric archaeology, is housed within the former cloisters of an abbey.
