Central Klagenfurt is three kilometres from the east shore of Worthersee lake in southern Austria. There are lots of Klagenfurt hotels near the lakeside and also in the foothills of the Karawankens and Ulrichsberg mountains. Choosing to stay outside the city gives convenient access to the lakeside beach and other local attractions, yet the city's main Alter Platz square and its old Renaissance edifices are also within easy range. Worthersee's waters are the warmest in the Alps and in summer, the beach near Klagenfurt is a major attraction for both locals and visitors. Minimundus is nearby and contains around 150 models of architectural delights from around the world that include the Sydney Opera House and the Taj Mahal. Hallegg and Tentschach castles are both just outside the city and are easy half-day outings. There are plentiful restaurants, cafes and bars in the outer areas of the city, and these tend to be cheaper than the ones in the city centre. Traditional Austrian fare is on offer, with staples such as rindsuppe, gulasch and topfenstrudel featuring prominently.
