Introduction to Klagenfurt - City Centre
Klagenfurt is a city in southern Austria that straddles the banks of the Glan River close to the shores of Worthersee Lake. The city is ringed by verdant mountains such as the Karawankens and Ulrichsberg. The city centre is centred on Alter Platz square, where wonderful old Renaissance buildings draw visitors from afar. Other draws in the centre include the Lindwurm Fountain, Viktring Abbey and Klagenfurt Cathedral. The Landesmuseum, one of several in the centre, houses ancient armour and artefacts, including the Lindwurmschadel dragon skull. Visitors have a good selection of Klagenfurt City Centre hotels to choose from, with most in the environs of Alter Platz. Restaurants serving traditional fare and others offering ethnic gastronomy, cafes and beer halls are dotted around the centre. The Worthersee is the warmest of the lakes in the Alps and on a summer's day, the city beach is thronged with bathers. The lake is two kilometres west of the central city district. Other nearby tourist sites are Minimundus's model architecture, Tentschach Castle and Kreuzbergl park and gardens.
