Introduction to Innsbruck, Austria
The Alps surround virtually every corner of the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck. This stunning western Austrian city has twice hosted the Winter Olympics and is ranked among the biggest ski resorts in the Alps - popular not only for its outstanding Inn River valley location, but also its proximity to northern Italy and Munich, Germany. Despite the city's large amount of visitors, rooms at Innsbruck hotels are easy to find even during the busiest summer and winter seasons. A week is long enough to see all of the city's highlights, especially the medieval buildings which have stood here since the city first became the Tyrolean capital in 1429. The Golden Roof's 2,657 gilded copper tiles appear even more beautiful against the white backdrop of the nearby Alps, which can be seen even more clearly from the summit of the 14th century Stadtturm. The more modern side of Austria's fifth-largest city surfaces at night, when the nation's third-biggest student population heads for its numerous beer gardens and brewpubs.
