Introduction to Innsbruck - City Centre
The city of Innsbruck is nestled in a valley ringed by majestic mountains, including the 2,250m high Patscherkofel, in western Austria. The city is famed for its abundance of winter sports venues. A cable car links the city to Nordkette ski resort, while other resorts including Axamer Lizum are in the immediate environs. Innsbruck city centre is centred around an old quarter known as the Altstadt. This precinct sits besides the River Inn and contains attractions such as a majestic 17th century cathedral, the landmark Golden Roof and the Stadtmuseum. The Golden Roof sits atop an ornate building dating from the early 16th century. The museum houses eclectic exhibits including Roman artefacts and heritage musical instruments. The Hofgarten is an attractive park on the north side of the centre featuring a tropical greenhouse, a children's playground and a restaurant. The city district has an ample choice of Innsbruck city centre hotels which are within walking range of attractions, restaurants and shops. Maria Theresien Strasse is one of several shopping streets here where Tyrolean souvenirs and contemporary goods alike can be found. Visit our Innsbruck Travel Guide
