Sydney is a popular tourist destination with the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge instantly recognisable. Tourism in the city was further enhanced by the hosting of the 2000 Olympic Games.
There is no shortage of things to see and do in Sydney and you should have no problem finding things to arouse your interests and tastes. There is a good range of museums and galleries giving plenty of opportunities to learn both about the history of modern Australia and the history of indigenous people who have lived here for 30,000 years.
Sydney’s beaches are known throughout the world, and while Bondi and Manly are the most famous and popular, there are around 30 beaches in the metropolitan area. There is a lively nightlife and a large gay-scene, as well as some fine restaurants serving up traditional Aussie tucker as well as modern Australian cuisine with its Asian and Mediterranean influences.
Transport both to and around the city is relatively good, with a modern international airport, good road and rail links, and a monorail and tram serving the city itself.
