Sydney Travel Guide
Beach: Sydney is famed for its beaches and there are more than 30 within the metropolitan area, some with excellent surf and others calmer for relaxing swimming. There are lifeguards on duty at most of Sydney’s ocean beaches in the peak summer months, with flags to indicate. You should swim between the flags for safety reasons.
Many people associate Australia with sharks, but in reality it is very rare for a shark to be aggressive to humans, and most Sydney beaches are protected by shark nets. Bluebottle jellyfish are more likely to be a problem, and signs indicate when they are present. Sunbathing topless is quite common at all the beaches, and a couple allow nude sunbathing, such as Lady Jane Beach.
Manly is to the north of the harbour and is also fairly crowded with good facilities. Manly also has some good shops and is best reached by ferry from Circular Quay, from where it is a ten minute walk to the beach.
Golf: golfers will be very happy in Sydney; with over 90 golf courses and typically pleasant weather, there are plenty of opportunities to fit in a round or two. The nearest course to the city is Moore Park Golf Club, but visitors are not allowed to play on Fridays and Saturdays. One of the most popular courses outside the city is the beautiful Greg Norman designed ‘The Vintage’ in the Hunter Valley area.
The Sydney Swans also play the occasional big match at the Telstra Stadium. It is well worth going to a game if you get the chance with the season beginning at the end of March lasting until September. Rugby League fans should head to the Aussie Stadium at Moore Park to see the Sydney Roosters play, between May and September.
