Melbourne Travel Guide - Things To Do

Bush walking: there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy this activity in the forest reserves and parks including the You Yangs Forest Reserve, Brisbane Ranges National Park, Wombat State Forest, Organ Pipes National Park, Kinglake National Park and the Dandenong Ranges. The Federation of Victorian Walking Clubs can provide information and maps for the Melbourne area.
Caving (Spelunking): is becoming more popular and there are many tour operators providing trips to caves. Caving includes squeezing through holes, making your way up rockfalls, going through pools, climbing up rapids and also waterfalls, so it is not for the claustrophobic or faint hearted.
Cycling: almost all of Melbourne’s parks have bicycle paths that are in good condition and suitable for the entire family. Visitors can enjoy cycling in beautiful surroundings at Studley Park, Royal Park and West Gate Park.
Bird watching: nature lovers will be amazed at the variety of birds they can spot in and around Melbourne. The wildlife reserves or parks are the best places to enjoy bird watching. Don’t forget to take along your binoculars.
A variety of boating options including sail boats, dinghies and paddle boats are all easily available. Other water sports that are available include kayaking, river rafting, jet skiing and many others.
Ballooning: is an activity that the whole family can enjoy. A balloon ride is the perfect way of appreciating the beautiful views over the Yarra Valley. Many tour operators provide a champagne breakfast as part of the ballooning tour package.
Winter sport: skiing can usually be enjoyed in June and until early October but this would depend on weather conditions. There are several ski resorts located fairly close to Melbourne including the resort at Mount Hautham at the Alpine National Park, Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and those at Mount Buller.
