Cairns Travel Guide - Getting There
By air: flights from international and domestic locations arrive at Cairns Airport. There are direct flights from the United Kingdom, Europe, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and various other international destinations. Domestic flights are handled by Qantas, Virgin Blue, Sunstate and Flight West Air Link. There are also local charter companies making it very convenient to reach Cairns by air.
By train: several train services link Cairns to other cities in Australia. The Queenslander commutes between Brisbane and Cairns, a journey of about 32 hours. However, the train is extremely comfortable: fully air conditioned with lounge cars, excellent dining and a variety of sleeping options. The Sunlander also links Brisbane to Cairns three times a week. Spirit of the Outback and the Tilt Train also offer services to Cairns.
Interstate buses leave and depart from the bus station at Trinity Wharf on Wharf street. Sun palm coaches connect Cairns with Cooktown, a trip of about five hours, three times a week and Cape Tribulation, twice a day.
By boat: Cairns has a reputation for providing excellent marina services. Many private yachts and also international cruise ships call at the port of Cairns frequently.
