Lizard Island Black Marlin Class: is held for seven days in October. It is possible to catch marlin weighing more than one thousand pounds off the island and the competition attracts many experienced marlin fishers.

Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival: is held in Cannon Park in October and is traditionally the social event of the year. The guests wear hats and smart clothes and mix with Governors, Premiers and top Australian business men. The race carnival is held for two days and the primary focus is on the thoroughbred horse racing although the fashion shows, wine and food tasting events are much appreciated. The last day has a parade of lights and firework display.
