Adelaide Travel Guide - Getting There
By air: Adelaide’s airport serves both international and domestic airlines and is conveniently located within 10kms of the city centre. Qantas, Virgin Blue and Jetstar operate multiple daily flights to Adelaide, with average flight times being one hour from Melbourne and 90 minutes from Sydney. International flights from many parts of the world including Asia and Europe land here daily.
By train: interstate trains including the Overland, the Ghan and the Indian Pacific arrive and depart from the Keswick Rail Terminal, located at Richmond road, about 3kms from the city. The Overland offers a daytime service between Adelaide to Melbourne via the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale. The Ghan chugs to Darwin and the Indian Pacific to Perth.
By road: driving in and around Adelaide is very pleasant. The roads and motorways are in excellent condition and link many major cities and towns to Adelaide. The only drawback about driving would be the vast distances that have to be covered. It is approximately 755kms to Melbourne, 1420kms to Sydney and 1740kms to Ayers Rock.
Driving in the outback can also be a little tricky if it is your first experience. Ensure that you have a good supply of drinking water, food, petrol, a pair of sunglasses, a mobile phone with the local automobile support numbers and a good map. You are advised to stay in the shade should your car have a breakdown and call for assistance immediately.
