None of Western Australia's inland towns date further back than York WA, one of the country's best preserved 19th century communities. Over the years, this Avon Valley community, situated 100kms east of Perth, has evolved from a traditional wheat and sheep farming community to a high-class tourist destination. Many guests at York WA hotels seek relaxing escapes from the big city, but the local heritage trail warrants attention during even the laziest of getaways here. The trail brochure is divided into four walks and follows the route of the community's original settlers. Each walk takes between two to three hours to complete, and the impressive police station and courthouse are among the highlights. The grand Gothic Church of St Patrick took over a decade to build and one of Australia's only two-floor railway stations still stands here. A motor museum contains Australia's largest display of buggies and motor vehicles. More than 3,000 dolls are displayed in the Town Hall.
