Yea is a picturesque township where its namesake river intersects with the Goulburn River in a scenic valley north of Australia's Great Divide. The population of this community, situated 110kms northeast of Melbourne, has remained virtually unchanged during the past century. Most Yea hotels are situated alongside restaurants, cafes and historic buildings on its wide main street. The tourist information centre, also on the main street, provides a pamphlet describing these historic buildings in detail. Among the oldest of these buildings are the 1890 Post Office, 1891 Pavilion and 1869 St Luke's Anglican Church. Far older still, however, are the remnants of leaves at the Limestone Road Baragwanathia fossil site. In fact, the foliage here is among the oldest on Earth. The 200m Cheviot railway tunnel, built from handmade bricks and clay, is said to be the biggest railway tunnel in the state of Victoria. The nearest golf course is on Racecourse Road.
