Introduction to Yarra Valley, Australia

The area in Victoria which surrounds the Yarra River is commonly known as the Yarra Valley. The river stretches from around 56 miles east of Melbourne and empties into Port Philip Bay. The valley is most famous for its wineries, which take around one hour to reach from Melbourne via the Maroondah Highway and the Eastern Freeway. There are several towns and cities which host Yarra Valley hotels, such as Healesville, Belgrave and Yarra Glen. Healesville is well-known for its animal sanctuary, where visitors can see native wildlife such as emus, platypus and kangaroos. The Yarra Valley Tourist Train departs from Healesville. Of course, the town offers easy access to several wineries in the surrounding areas. On the other hand, Yarra Glen is a great place for shopping, especially at its Sunday market. Many visitors to the region hire a car to travel between the various wineries. However, those that plan to taste the local wine are advised to designate a driver.
