Introduction to Yarra Junction, Australia
On the confluence of two rivers, the Yarra and the Little Yarra, sits the small town and local business centre of Yarra Junction. It was named so when it became a major rail junction on the Warburton Highway, 66kms from Melbourne. It's a historic town with an interesting museum set in the railway old station and displaying material related to the early years of timber trading. Yarra is a centre for vineyards and wineries, with several in town welcoming visitors on tasting trips and doubling as Yarra Junction hotels. In this mainly agricultural area, there is much to see and do connected with farming, berry picking and other rural pursuits. Haining Farm has Jersey and Friesian cows for those fascinated by farm life and the Yellingbo State Fauna reserve and Bunyip State Park are a both a short drive away. Walkers and cyclists can take the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail along the route of the old railroad through pristine forests with fine views of the Central Highlands.
