Introduction to Wonthaggi, Australia
Originally a coal-mining centre, the Victoria State town of Wonthaggi is now a regional service hub for the tourist industry as well as the beef and daily cattle stations in the region. Set 130kms from Melbourne, in Gippsland Shire, it's approached via the Bass and South Gippsland highways. It's home to a small wind farm which is now a tourist attraction. Other points of interest include the State Coal Mine Historic Reserve, giving a filmed and documented history of mining in the town with the historic mine shafts and other mine buildings on display. Two nearby beaches attract summer visitors staying in Wonthaggi hotels, with Harmers Haven great for snorkelling, surfing and fishing but poor for swimming. Wreck Beach is named for a famous ship that was wrecked here in 1901 and Safety Beach at Cape Patterson, eight kilometres from town, is great for swimming, rock-climbing and snorkelling. Surf Beach, as its name suggests, is for surfers. other spellings: wonthaggihotels, wonthagi hotell, wontaggi otel, vontaggi hote, womthaggi vic hotle
