Introduction to Wollongong - City Centre
Wollongong in New South Wales is a long, narrow city perched on a coastal strip measuring 40kms long and six kilometres at its widest point. Set at the edge of Sydney, the city's proudest achievement is its coal mines and massive heavy industry park, the largest in Australia. Even so, the city is becoming a focus for visitors due to its 17 surfing beaches, botanic gardens, arts and culture scene and the huge Nan Tien Buddhist temple. The city centre around Crown Street is mainly given over to shopping, with Crown Street Mall, department stores, an antiques mall and a weekly market crammed with bargains of all kinds. Wollongong's downtown district is home to the rail station and several Wollongong city centre hotels as well as several museums near Market Square displaying reconstructions of 19th century shops and homes complete with their original artefacts. The square itself is a fully-restored Victorian treasure. Close to the shopping area is the green expanse of MacCabe Park, perfect for a picnic or a stroll.
