Set in a pretty area of South Australia and fronting the Flinders Ranges is the tiny settlement of Wirrabara, 36kms from Port Germein and 240kms from Adelaide. Close by is Wirrabara Forest Reserve, with its Heyson Trail, scenic drives and spectacular views of the ocean and Spencer Gulf. Bushwalking and picnicking are favourite occupations here. Wirrabara's Tourist Information Centre lies adjacent to the village's Wongabirrie Park and offers leaflets to all of the area's natural attractions. Wirrabara hotels come in the shape of motels and bed and breakfasts scattered around the historic streets, with their Victorian buildings and little shops. On the third Sunday of each month, a popular farmers' market is held, offering local produce such as meats, dried and fresh fruit, bakery goods and olive oils as well as plants, local crafts and live poultry. Don't miss the old steam engine parked in the village's main street. Nearby Port Germein with its historic jetty was a shipping point for locally grown grain and has a number of interesting Victorian buildings as well as the jetty itself.
