Introduction to Wilsons Promontory, Australia
Nestling at the foot of Mount Oberon is Wilsons Promontory, the peninsula forming the southern tip of Australia's mainland. Its rugged coastline is marked by the Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse and the tiny settlement of Tidal River, set on a spectacular, isolated bay. It's the largest area of coastal wilderness in Victoria State and was designated a national park over 100 years ago. Tiny Tidal River is the only village in the park, with its several Wilsons Promontory hotels a focus for tourism and recreational activities. A unique feature of the area is the river's water colour - a purplish-yellow hue, caused by the tea tree forests in the area, which stain the ground water with tannin. Eco-tourists are in heaven here, with many indigenous marsupials including wombats and other fauna such as kangaroos, koalas, long-nosed potoroos, dunnarts, broad-toothed rats and wallabies inhabiting the area. Birders are in their element with emus, cockatoos, crimson rosellas and many other introduced bird species.
